DECKER, Texas — For many, it’s the day they finally get their next paycheck.
For others, it means getting their hands dirty, such as fixing a leak or painting their boats.
For some, it is a dream come true.
But for a small group of people who love to paint their boats, painting their vessels has been a way to escape reality for a while.
In fact, many are doing it all the time.
It’s been years since Mark and Jill Stokes left their small home in Texas for their new digs in the beautiful and scenic town of Denton, Texas, which is about 50 miles north of Dallas.
They were in town for the wedding of their two sons and hoped to take a weekend vacation there.
But the couple decided to spend the weekend painting their boat instead.
They love to decorates their boats and have found it to be a great way to get away from the constant hustle and bustle of their busy lives.
They have painted their boat over the years, but their passion for decorating has taken a back seat to their job as an insurance agent.
“It’s the most fun,” said Jill Stokers, 32.
“It’s a way of not dealing with the everyday things that we have to do.”
Mark Stokes, 32, said the painting job has been rewarding for him.
“I’ve learned so much about myself and how to make art,” he said.
“I think the art and the decorating have been very therapeutic for us.”
Stokes has painted many boats for family and friends, including a replica of a vintage yacht.
He said he has painted over 2,000 vessels and has had a lot of success.
He is now finishing a second painting project and hopes to paint the boat next year.
“We’re very happy with the boat and we think it will be great for a few years,” he added.
But there are some who say the hobby isn’t as easy as it sounds.
In April 2017, Denton Police arrested two young men on charges of vandalism after they spray painted a yacht in a lake, with the word “GOD” spray painted in large letters, on the side of the boat.
The men were charged with misdemeanor vandalism and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
They also are being held on $25,000 bond.
A new paint company, Mascot Paint, has been started by Mark and his brother and is looking to expand their operation to include more vessels.
They have already painted several more boats and are planning on adding more vessels in the future.
“People can see the boats are just getting bigger and bigger and then we’ll be able to take them off the boat,” Mark said.
Stokes hopes to eventually finish a new painting project to paint a boat, which will then go to the auction house to be sold.
He also hopes to do a custom boat for someone who needs a new home.
“If you’re in a hurry, you can paint the house.
We can do that,” he joked.
“If you want to do something else, we’ll do that.”
